Bastimentos National Marine Park:
Salt Creek
Following breakfast, we will leave the facility for a 15-minute boat ride to Salt Creek. Here we will continue up the creek beneath the canopy of dense mangrove forest to the indigenous village of Quebrada Sal.
To access the trailhead into Bastimentos National Marine Park, we will cross the rolling open pastures of the village. As we enter the park, the dense rainforest canopy is full of exotic tropical plants. Thousands of plant species exist in the park, including hardwoods, forest palms, vines, bryophytes, ferns, bromeliads, orchids and other epiphytes.
Wildlife sightings may include white-faced monkeys, two- and three-toed sloths, green iguanas, Jesus lizards, poison dart frogs, butterflies, and a plethora of exotic birds as we hike toward Playa Larga.
The terrain is varied, with winding foot trails that climb and descend the hills of the forest. Both hands and feet are necessary to climb and descend in a few spots. Surrounded by the jungle, we will begin to hear the ocean swells. Then all of a sudden, as if someone turned on the lights, we exit the canopy onto the long, sweeping beach.
This pristine beach is a nesting ground to four species of endangered sea turtles and is protected by the national park. After a refreshing swim, and lunch on the secluded beach, we head back through the jungle and return to the boat.

Bahia Honda
Following breakfast, we will leave the facility for a 20-minute boat ride to Bahia Honda, where we will enter the interior rainforest of Bastimentos National Marine Park through La Loma Jungle Lodge.
This beautiful old cocoa farm has been transformed into a butterfly hatchery and eco-lodge and maintains some of the best trails in the area, and the tallest vantage point on the Island. An abundance of flora and fauna cover the forest and the views of the ocean and rainforest canopy from 200 feet are stunning. Also visible from high atop this hill is the Laguna de Bastimentos, the only natural fresh water lake in the islands. We will enjoy lunch by the tranquil freshwater rock pools at La Loma before our next hike into cave Nivida.
A short boat ride up Bahia Honda Creek through lush vegetation leads us to the trail. A jungle trail takes us into Bastimentos National Marine Park and leads to the entrance of Nivida. Entering the cave with lights, we will explore this subterranean phenomenon while wading through cold spring water and passing nectar bats. The support boat will be waiting in the creek for our return to Tranquilo Bay.

Cayos Zapatillas
Following breakfast, we will leave the facility for a 12-minute boat ride to the pristine Cayos Zapatillas, located in Bastimentos National Marine Park. These secluded islands, resting on the offshore barrier reef, are home to the best beaches in the archipelago.
We will walk the beaches while darting in and out of the trees to admire the amazing bryophytes, ferns, bromeliads, orchids and other epiphytes. Beautiful driftwood, shells, sand dollars, starfish, coconuts, almond and sea grape trees line these white sand beaches.
Once we have circled the Island, we will board the boat and cross the mile-long channel to the second Zapatilla. Here we will follow the beach to the ranger station. Lunch will be served under a cool thatched palapa with an incredible view of the offshore reef.
From the ranger station there is a trail leading to the forested interior. On the shaded trail we will watch for flora and fauna, including birds, lizards, flowering plants, and colorful insects. When the hike is done enjoy a refreshing swim before we return to Tranquilo Bay.

Hiking Types:

To enhance your experience, we plan our explorations into the rainforest with three distinct variables, each providing a different experience...  Each excursion may include elements of each variable or may be completed using one variable alone.

A naturalist hike will slowly and quietly move beneath the canopy actively searching flora and fauna such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, hardwoods, forest palms, vines, bryophytes, ferns, bromeliads, orchids, and other epiphytes. This type of hike generally consists of a short, brisk walk to reach an area of interest. Once there, the pace slows and there is more observation and learning than hiking.

All ages and fitness levels can enjoy this casual and invigorating hiking experience. We have plenty of books in our library so you can study up on your favorite plant and animal species, or discover new ones.

A destination hike is more of a cardiovascular workout and can be paced to meet the group's needs. This hike's main objective is to move toward the primary target, such as a waterfall, beach, or cave perhaps, while observing the jungle through a "wide angle lens".

The pace is brisk and distance longer. Short rests will be taken at areas of interest, such as poison dart frogs or blooming orchids. These hikes require a moderate level of physical fitness, and are not suited for children younger than 10.

Extreme hiking is for the cardiovascular workout enthusiast. The primary goal is to cover as much varied terrain as possible. Because of the long distance covered, topography and habitat changes are abrupt and frequent.

You might run down the beach as the trail slips in and out of the jungle, or scale an oceanfront rock face -- the only barrier between you and the next beach.

There will be many hills of steep grade and the terrain variable. When the hike is done you should be wet, dirty, and completely satiated. High fitness levels required, keeping in mind that the distance can be shortened.
